Joo Chiat Place Fried Kway Teow – Popular Char Kway Teow With Strong Wok Hei Since 1950s
January 07, 2022
Carrying on your family’s legacy is no easy feat. Yet, one stall has successfully accomplished that and is continuing to fry up delicious plates of char kway teow since the 50s to this day!
Joo Chiat Place Fried Kway Teow has been serving their family recipe’s char kway teow since the 1950s. The stall is currently helmed by Ms Ling, who had taken over the wok from her family at Dong Cheng Eatery.
As I waited for my plate, heavy clouds of white smoke could be seen emitting from Ms Ling’s skilful frying of noodles. The aroma alone made my stomach grumble in approval.
The char kway teow comes in $4 and $5 portions. I got the $5 one with chilli, and was greeted with nicely-caramelised noodles, fresh plump cockles, sliced fish cake, egg, bean sprouts, and lup cheong (Chinese sausage). The light soy sauce coated each strand of noodle, which had a deep smokiness and guaranteed wok hei, adequately. Be delighted by tiny treasures of pork lard nestled within the noodles!
As some say, “East side is the best side”. Well, we are not sure about that but Joo Chiat Place Fried Kway Teow certainly is one of Joo Chiat’s hidden gems!
