Jalan Tua Kong Lau Lim Mee Pok – Their QQ Noodles and Homemade Chilli Will Keep You Coming Back for More!
November 29, 2022
Simpang Bedok has its fair share of culinary gems that’s often visited by flocks of people and amongst the hawkers selling mee pok there, Jalan Tua Kong Lau Lim Mee Pok is one that sees many folks coming down for their tasty bowls of bak chor mee. The coffeeshop they reside in also sells kaya toast for breakfast, and wu xiang and carrot cake as well. But you definitely can’t skip out on the mee pok!
Opened for over 20 years and a household name in Simpang Bedok since 2004, Jalan Tua Kong Lau Lim Mee Pok is run by Mr Ling Jing Xiong and his family along with a mini army of hired staff. The 56 year-old hawker has been cooking mee pok since he was young and told us how he started from the bottom as a dishwasher.
He still takes charge of the cooking himself when the stall gets especially busy, with prep work for the day beginning from as early as 5am — such as chilli making which is handled by his wife. Their chilli is a key ingredient that keeps folks coming back for more. In fact, they cook up batches of chilli at least twice a day to meet the demand for it.
Besides noodles, they also fry up plates of Fried Crispy Carrot Cake ($4/5) and platters of wu xiang at just $1, which they only started doing about four to five years ago.
A standard bowl of mee pok ($5.50 for small, $6.50 for medium, $7.50 for large) comes with minced meat, pork slices, fishcake slices, fishballs, and a couple of prawns. There’s free flow crispy pork lard at their condiments counter, so be sure to top your bowl up with as much as you would like!
The noodles were perfectly al dente and you can taste the fragrance of the aromatic house-made chilli from the moment you slurp up the noods. There was a good punch of spiciness that lingered and made the entire bowl very addictive. You can definitely see why that’s the selling point of their mee pok here!
The meatballs were just a tad too salty but added a good bite to the bowl. The fishballs were also pleasantly bouncy. I also can’t resist giving their lard yet another shout out here; each piece was fairly large and crunchy.
Folks who aren’t fans of spiciness, fret not! Jalan Tua Kong Lau Lim Mee Pok also serves up bowls of noodles with a ketchup base. We went with mee kia for this version and the noodles were just as QQ. I would have preferred just a tiny bit more tanginess from the sauce base.
In addition, we gave the Dumpling Soup ($6) a go as well and were rewarded with a savoury broth that had sweet undertones. The large handmade dumplings were wonderfully meaty and full of umami, a sign that the pork mix had been seasoned to perfection.
Jalan Tua Kong Lau Lim Mee Pok’s reputation is definitely well-deserved and their mee pok is worth making a trip for. It was a shame the carrot cake and wu xiang weren’t available during our visit but we’ll be coming back again to give them a shot!
