Jai Thai (Jln Pemimpin) – Eat Authentic Thai Food with Less Than $10
November 28, 2012
My craving for Thai food never stop. After having lunch at Thai Gold Food not too long ago, I am back at another Thai restaurant for dinner. And this time, it’s Jai Thai!
So one night, we crawled our way to the Jalan Pemimpin outlet because it is closest to my home. It is quite a distance from Marymount MRT but thank goodness for the cooling weather. I tried to make reservation in the afternoon, but had a very amusing conversation with the waitress.
Me:”Hello, I want to make reservation for 2 for dinner.”
Waitress:”Huh? What you want?”
Me:”Reserve 2 people. Dinner.”
Waitress:”Oh you want to re-ser ah? How many?”
Me:”2. Tonight.”
Waitress:”Ok ok, bye bye bye bye!”
I guessed I really called at the wrong time lah. No name nor telephone number is taken. But we reached the restaurant at night, I realized no need make reservations one, no wonder the waitress “bye bye bye bye”.
Anyway, at the entrance, you can never miss its signboard with a banner that says “The most value for money authentic thai cuisine”. I bugged the boyf to give me a treat, but when we reached there, we realized they only accept cash and don’t accept cards. So in the end, I gave the boyf a treat. -.-
We started with a Mixed Platters ($7 small) which has prawn cake, fish cake, Thai spring rolls and deep fried bean curd. I like Thai cuisines because they seem to know how to capture the local diner’s stomach. Cannot decide on which appetizer, never mind, order the mixed platters and you can have everything!
We like the Thai spring rolls the most and prefers the prawn cake and fish cake to be thicker so as to give more bite.
The boyf’s favourite Thai dish is Pandan Chicken ($2/pc) and we eat it everywhere. We can’t help but to compare it with Nakhon Kitchen. I feel the pandan chicken at Nakhon is much better because it is more fatty, hence more juicy. The pandan chicken here is deep fried, so you cannot really taste the smoky flavour nor the pandan aroma. And it is much tougher.
Tom Yum Seafood ($5)is cooked with fresh prawns and fried fish. Spicy enough to have the kick, shiok!
Each of us ordered an individual set menu which is served with a main course, a drink and a dessert. After placing our order, the waitress served us our dessert immediately which was rather weird. Anyway, I ordered Olive Set ($7.80) which consists of olive rice, mango salad, Tau Fu Green Curry, Fish with Chilli Sauce and Fried Mix Vegetables.
The olive rice is dry and bland, but I am glad the dishes made up for it. Jai Thai’s mango salad rock my world. its spicy, sweet and abit sourish. So is the fried mix vegetables which feels like home cooked dishes.
I really enjoyed the Pad Thai ($5) and I feel it is much better than Nakhon. It is flavourful enough and has the perfect balance of sweet, sticky and savoury. The noodles are well fried, not sticking together and each mouthful has a wok hei aroma.
The Chendol ($3) here is rather bland, so I suggest don’t waste your calories on it.
Overall, I agree that this is one of the affordable Thai restaurant. With less than $10, you can get very filling set meals!
