J2 Famous Crispy Curry Puff – Gorgeously Flaky Puffs With Generous Fillings in Amoy Street Food Centre!
August 12, 2022
MICHELIN Bib Gourmand curry puffs? Yes, please! Located within Amoy Street Food Centre, J2 Famous Crispy Curry Puff has certainly made quite a name for itself, thanks to its well-stuffed golden pastries. Many customers are still seen coming by even as the stall is beginning to pack up for the day but we recommend coming by earlier to get puffs fresh from the fryer!
Run by a husband-and-wife duo Lee Meng Li and Wu Jing Hua since 2007, the stall is known for curry puffs methodically hand-made from scratch. The couple ran a bakery prior to setting up their curry puff stall, and their stint at the bakery definitely honed their skills and better equipped them to churn out some of the best curry puffs in Singapore.
They sell three different types of curry puffs – Curry Chicken ($1.80), Sardine ($1.80) and Black Pepper Chicken ($2). There’s a fourth elusive flavour of yam that is only sold in limited quantities and runs out quickly due to high demand. There’s a slight hike in price compared to their earlier days, but it’s still rather affordable and definitely worth it.
Nothing could ever beat the classics and the Crispy Curry Chicken Puff was my favourite of the lot. The flaky layers of pastry crust had a heavenly, buttery flavour and was the perfect vessel for the fillings within as it was neither too thick or thin. It does get a little messy so you might want to brace yourself with a plate or napkin, but that’s just a testament to how superb of a pastry it is.
As for the curry chicken and potato mixture, the curry roux was decadently creamy and brimming with flavour with a hint of spice that doesn’t seek to overwhelm. It’s definitely a match made in heaven with the outer layer of the curry puff.
The Crispy Sardine Puff was absolutely packed to the brim with a sardine mixture. I’m not a fan of sardines, but J2 Famous Crispy Curry Puff’s rendition was a worthy purchase. The meaty sardine blend, which had a combination of tanginess and spice, was spruced up with onions. It wasn’t overwhelmingly fishy so it also makes for a good stepping stone into making sardine curry puffs a go-to for folks like me.
I’m not as much of a fan of the Crispy Black Pepper Chicken Puff as compared to the other two. The black pepper sauce was not as peppery as I would have liked it to be and it just seemed to pale in comparison with the others.
J2 Famous Crispy Curry Puff is definitely deserving of its MICHELIN Bib Gourmand status, especially because the execution of their curry puffs is consistently good.
