Ichiban Boshi – PenCai and Yusheng With A Japanese Twist

We Singaporeans love our Japanese food no matter the season and it’s no exception for Chinese New Year! Contemporary Japanese dining restaurant Ichiban Boshi makes way for the Year of the Ox with a dazzling array of celebration platters, seasonal set meals and our favourite festive dishes with an elegant twist.
Jazz up your reunion dinners at home with their first-ever, online-exclusive Japanese Treasure Pot ($188+ for four to five pax). Overflowing with premium ingredients, the illustrious Pen Cai features scrumptious top-notch goodies like whole abalone, sashimi-grade scallops from Hokkaido, snow crab leg meat, and shiitake mushrooms, all sprinkled with edible gold leaves that sparkle beneath the lights. The umami-filled superior stock warmed me to the bones with its delicious, comforting flavours.
You can’t have CNY without the customary yusheng – how else will you be ushering in good fortunes and prosperous tidings for the new year? Toss to a year of abundance with their best-selling Salmon Yuzu YuSheng, available in two different size options for dine-in and takeaway. Each set comes with fresh Norwegian salmon slices shaped into a picturesque rose and a refreshingly tangy housemade yuzu sauce made with imported Japanese ingredients.
The Auspicious YuSheng ($62.80++ for 24 pieces of salmon) is good for eight to ten people while the Bountiful YuSheng ($50.80++ for 18 pieces of salmon) serves four to six people. There is also a Celebration YuSheng ($36.80++ for 12 pieces of salmon) exclusively available for an intimate dine-in celebration between two to three folks.
And back by popular demand is the online-exclusive 6 Treasures Fruits YuSheng ($56.80+ for six to eight pax) that comes with a healthy smattering of pomelo, pear, guava, mango, pineapple and jackfruit. This vibrantly colourful ensemble was a breath of fresh air from the usual suspects I have had every year and tastes just as good. Plus points for being a healthier choice as well!
Each year, I’m always on the lookout for places with an arsenal of cute angbaos and Ichiban Boshi certainly didn’t fail to deliver. Every order of yusheng comes with a complimentary set of limited-edition Fortune Cat Red Packets (while stocks last).
A stay-at-home feast definitely needs more dishes on the table to feed its hungry guests. Chow down on a delectable Yamato Sashimi Platter ($59.90+ for 29 pieces) that includes an assortment of spicy salmon carpaccio, scallops, swordfish belly and more. They also offer a Yuri Hot Platter ($36.90+) of fried bites like chicken, egg with mentai mayo and pumpkin croquette. My favourite, however, has to be the Fuji Sushi Platter ($49.90+ for 28 pieces) because I’m an absolute glutton for bluefin tuna sushi.

The celebrations don’t just end with the customary reunion dinners. From now till 28 February 2021, Ichiban Boshi, in collaboration with meat-substitute producer Quorn, is offering a Festive Indulgence menu available for dine-ins. My pick is the Spicy Chicken Sugiita-yaki Gozen ($27.90++) that comes with fried Quorn meat-free wantons, a mini rice bowl with salmon flakes and roe, chawanmushi, miso soup and kanten fruit jelly. The chicken steak is tender with a hint of spice, but I especially love the seared scallop and salmon sashimi perfumed with aromatic truffle oil that also came with slices of avocado.
While gatherings and festivities still have to remain small this year, Ichiban Boshi boasts a bounty of delicious offerings to devour in the comforts of home. ‘Tis the season to indulge and enjoy!
