Hup Lee Claypot Rice – Affordable Age-Old Claypot Rice Now at Millenia Walk!
May 19, 2021
Ever since the re-appearance of this age-old claypot rice stall, different Facebook groups for foodies have been posting rave reviews on it. My boss has been sending me screenshots of recommended dishes and urging us to write about it. I never understood why she was so insistent until I finally decided to make a trip to Millenia Walk and find out what’s so magical about this claypot rice.
From the photos online, the stall seemed to be selling very normal bowls of claypot rice. I assumed that it would be overpriced, as it’s in a mall downtown. To my pleasant surprise, each portion of rice is priced very reasonably between $6 to $7. Their menu has a good variety, while keeping it simple. There are three types of claypot rice, two variations of claypot curry and hotplate noodles.
I got their signature Gong Bao Chicken Claypot Noodles ($6) and Chicken Curry ($6, without a bowl of rice). I was not expecting such massive bowls with liberal amounts of meats and ingredients. As I watched the smoke dancing around the boiling curry, I knew it was going to be a good meal.
First up, the signature Gong Bao Chicken. Give it a good mix within the first three minutes from the moment you get it to prevent the crispy rice below from being too charred!
In almost every spoonful, I found a piece of tender chicken coated in dark soya sauce with a smack of spiciness.
The heat got stronger with every mouthful, so if you don’t have a strong spice tolerance, grab a drink just in case! For me, this is one hearty bowl of claypot rice that’s rich in flavours, and very reasonably priced. I will definitely be back to try the other variations!
Next, the Chicken Curry Claypot. Dang, this one is truly a gem. This set usually comes with a bowl of rice($1). Even though I had it without the rice, it was super shiok! I believe that pairing it with rice would just amplify the shiok-ness so much more.
Every mouthful of the curry packed a spicy punch which got more and more addictive with every sip. I really liked the thick, yet smooth, curry! The taste of the spices was pretty well balanced and the curry was not too spicy. I loved that it had a very slight hint of sweetness from the coconut milk.
A noteworthy thing about this curry is that the chicken and potato found in the bowl were in super large chunks. You might think that this means that the chicken and potato might not be cooked well. It was just the opposite — the chicken was tender and the potato was thoroughly cooked. It was very easy to bite through each piece of chicken and cut through the potatoes. I believe that this is one of the hallmarks of a good bowl of curry.
This stall dates back to at least 17 years ago, where it was located in Lucky Plaza, before moving to Marina Square and finally finding a new home in Millenia Walk. I highly recommend that you try out their Curry Chicken Claypot. It’s nothing fancy but it sure makes a very satisfying meal. The stall is located in a very beautifully-decorated Koufu at Millenia Walk so you can enjoy their piping hot creations in a comfortable environment!
