Hong Ji Ban Mian – A Hidden Gem Selling Ban Mian in Yishun

Managed by an old couple, Hong Ji Ban Mian serves up generous portions of classic dishes, at affordable prices starting from just $4.

I had the Ban Mian Soup ($4), Tom Yum Youmian ($4.50), and Dry Mee Hoon Kueh ($4). The noodles that the couple uses are all handmade, which explains their firm and QQ texture which still remained even after they were left out for awhile as I was taking some photos.

The broth for the Ban Mian was light, but it carried the familiar and comforting flavours usually found in good bowls of Ban Mian. This bowl also doesn’t leave you parched even after you have consumed the whole bowl, pointing to the absence of msg. If you are hankering for a spicy bowl of noods, top-up $0.50 for the Tom Yum rendition. The soup was adequately spicy with appetite-whetting sour notes. This will be perfect on a rainy day.

If you are a fan of dry noodles, you won’t be disappointed by their Dry Mee Hoon Kueh. Tossed in a mixture of dark sauce and chilli oil reminiscent of Din Tai Fung’s version, the noodles were fragrant and tasty.

You can also add toppings such as Soybeans or Fried Silver Fish. I have never seen soybeans being used as a topping in Ban Mian so I was quite surprised, in a pleasant way. I guess not everyone would take to the taste of having soybeans in their noodles, but I would say give it a go!

The friendliness of the elderly couple, and the taste of their Ban Mian, is definitely worth making a trip here for. Their dry Mee Hoon Kueh is something that I would find myself craving for every once in awhile!
