Hock Prawn Mee – 24-Hour Prawn Mee Stall in Jalan Besar!
July 20, 2018
Here’s another place to add to your list of late-night supper haunts. Hock Prawn Mee (福虾面) doesn’t just open till late, it’s open 24 hours! Just a stone’s throw away from Jalan Besar MRT, Hock Prawn Mee’s 24-hour operating hours isn’t just a gimmick. I had a quick word with the elderly lady who was manning the stall and found out that it has been operating for over 20 years!
You cant’t miss it when you walk into Shing Boon Hwa Food Centre. The stall has a huge well-lit signboard prominently advertising that it’s open for 24 hours. It’s not easy to run an all-day-every-day business, let alone a hawker stall. That being said, I was very curious to find out if Hock Prawn Mee serves up a good bowl of prawn mee!
Their menu really had me spoiled for choice — there are 7 different combinations that you can choose from! Options range from the basic Prawn Noodle, to ‘Supreme’ Prawn Noodle! Not only can you choose between soup and dry versions, you can also choose either egg noodles or bee hoon.
I decided to stick to the basics first, and tried their dry Prawn Noodle ($4.50). The bowl came with a decent amount of egg noodles topped with a house-made chilli sauce. The dish was also topped with thin slices of pork, and a few tiny prawns. Yes, you read that right. Boy were the prawns tiny. Surprisingly, despite their small size, the prawns were cooked quite well. They still had a slight springy bite, though they were by no means the freshest prawns I’ve tasted.
Give me any dish with egg noodles and I’ll eat it in a jiffy. Hock Prawn Mee’s dry Prawn Noodle was no exception. The starchy yellow noodles were springy, and had an eggy flavour that paired nicely with the robust chilli sauce. The chilli sauce had a good balance of sweetness and a tinge of spice. To me, the highlight of this dry version was the dark, moreish soup that was served on the side. I found myself slurping down spoonful after spoonful. It was packed with the briny flavour of prawn, which was complemented brilliantly by subtle meaty notes. Sure, the dish didn’t blow me away, but I’ll gladly eat this late at night if I’m craving for prawn mee!
I also tried the bee hoon version of the Intestine Pork Rib Prawn Noodle ($6.00). This bowl was chock full of meaty ingredients which include pork slices, ribs, intestines, and of course, the tiny prawns. I felt that the bee hoon didn’t work as well in this dish. The thicker bee hoon had a pleasant springy bite, but it didn’t quite absorb the flavours of the broth. Speaking of the broth, I actually found that it was rather bland. I could definitely detect the flavour of pork, but it tasted like it had been watered down.
Thankfully, the pork ribs were actually quite delicious! They were tender and succulent, with just the right fat content for a melt-in-your-mouth experience. Also, the pieces of intestine didn’t have an overpowering pungency. I’m not typically a fan of pork intestines, but Hock Prawn Mee’s were a great accompaniment to the dish!
Hock Prawn Mee makes a decent bowl of dry prawn mee. I don’t think they use the freshest of ingredients, but to be fair, this place stays open for a whopping 24 hours! If you’re planning to make a late-night trip to the stall, I’ll highly recommend that you order the dry version.
