Hock Kee Wanton Mee – Old School Wanton Mee in Ang Mo Kio That is so Satisfying!
October 12, 2022
I grew up in Ang Mo Kio and Kebun Bahru Food Centre has always been my playground. Old but always gold, Hock Kee Wanton Mee has been serving wanton mee since 1965.
Uncle Ong used to help out at his father’s pushcart stall back in the 60s. He would knock two bamboo sticks together to produce a ‘kok kok’ sound to inform customers of their arrival. In 1975, they opened a permanent hawker stall in Ang Mo Kio and have been serving residents in the area since then.
Every morning, Uncle Ong and his wife arrive at the stall at 3am to prepare the ingredients. They wrap their own wantons which are used only for that day.
Fun fact: Uncle Ong used to have long hair and resembled kungfu master Jacky Chan. Hence, his nickname is Jacky Chan.
Each plate of wanton mee comes with a handful of thinly-sliced char siew, wantons, vegetables, and a spoonful of their house-made sauce. The springy egg noodles had just the right amount of bite. To elevate the dish, crispy pork lard is added to give a nice touch of depth to the noodles.
The noodles are drenched with a mixture of savoury seasoning and house-made chilli sauce. I loved how the sauce coated each strand of noodle so well to deliver nostalgic and robust flavours. It’s perfect for days when you’re craving something simple, but it’s oh-so-satisfying nonetheless.
Even though Hock Kee isn’t the best wanton mee out there, there really isn’t much to complain about given that the noodles are just $3 a bowl. Definitely still worth trying!
Besides wanton mee, they also serve chicken feet noodles. Their chicken feet is braised perfectly till the flavours are imbued in them. It’s so soft, and the skin slips off the bone easily.
My cousin and I have been eating their wanton mee since we were kids. They have been with us through my school days and even though I have moved out of Ang Mo Kio, I would still go back to have a plate of wanton mee once in a while.
Here’s a tip for you: order for takeaway because the egg noodles will absorb the flavours completely, ensuring you have a burst of flavour in every bite!
