Hatter Street Bakehouse and Cafe: Gula Melaka Waffle with Pandan Ice Cream

It’s so funny how the people who know the least about you have the most to say. Throughout my blogging journey, the most important thing I learnt is to follow your heart and do things that make you happy. Not everyone will be happy. Someone may try to discredit you. But it’s okay, move on and never let these people stop you from doing what you love.

Anyway, the makan kakis has been urging me to visit Hatter Street for the longest time because they knew I am a waffle fan. Last Saturday, I finally tried it! Smack in the heartlands of Hougang (a few units away from Nakhon Kitchen), this Alice in wonderland inspired cafe is opened by Yvette Chua in 2013. A teacher turned chef owner of Hatter Street Bakehouse & Café, Yvette explored her professional development in the culinary arts through a degree majoring in professional studies in culinary arts management. She was trained in Bo Innovation, a 3-michelin starred restaurant known for their extreme Chinese cuisine in Hong Kong.

One of the signatures in Hatter Street is their waffles ($8.90) which comes in three different flavours. We picked a more localized flavour – Gula Melaka Waffle with Pandan Ice Cream. Waffles here are fluffy and has a light texture. Not the best for me, but still not bad. I was expecting it to be more aromatic.

The pandan ice cream and gula melaka sauce adds to the satisfying factor. I usually can’t finish my ice cream but in this case, we were all snatching over the last mouthful of pandan ice cream. It has a mild pandan fragrance but was so creamy and smooth. Hatter also has a decent selection of in-house baked pastries, and we decided to try their Passion Fruit Tart ($5.50). It was perfectly balanced, not too sweet nor too acidic. Coffee was alright but nothing much to shout about though.

Word of advice, be there early especially on weekends. The space is small and cramped, it’s hard to get a seat.
