Hajah Monah Kitchen – Scrumptious Nasi Padang at Newton
November 01, 2018
As I approached Newton Food Centre, I became worried. From a distance away, I saw that most stalls were closed, and there wasn’t a soul in sight. To my delight, it was the only stall that was opened! Thank goodness!
A short queue had already formed when I reached Hajah Monah Kitchen. I saw both locals and tourists in the queue. It was a sign that it has some nice food to offer! The nasi padang seemed the most popular, so I ordered it.
One of my favourite Malay dishes is beef rendang. It is a must-order for me. The beef rendang here was impressive. The meat was rich, creamy, and spicy. I would have preferred it to be spicier, but that’s just me. For those of you who can’t handle spiciness, don’t worry, this is tolerable. The meat was really so tender, I couldn’t get enough of it!
The assam fish looked good, so I couldn’t help but order it as well. It was quite a big piece! The stall owners have achieved the perfect balance of sweetness, spiciness, and sourness in their assam. I have to say, I was very impressed. The delicious fish separated easily into chunky flakes with a gentle nudge of the fork, and in no time, the entire fish was “swimming” in my stomach.
I had to have some vegetables too so I went for the sambal goreng which was appetizing and tasty. The tempeh and tau kwa were well-cooked, and the tangy flavours helped to cut through the richness of the meats. This vegetable dish was done just right!
Begedil (fried potato patty) is another favourite of mine, so I had high hopes for it. Sadly, the begedil here disappointed me. It lacked the crispy surface I was after, and its interior was slightly dry. It tasted quite bland too. It could’ve used a little more seasoning, but pair it with rice and the other sides and you should be good!
Even though my favourite begedil fell short of expectations, the other dishes made up for it. For $7.60, I found this meal quite worth value for money as the portion was quite huge. If you love nasi padang, try Hajah Monah Kitchen!
