Guan Seng Carrot Cake – Under-The-Radar Carrot Cake Stall Chilling in Telok Blangah
April 24, 2021
Telok Blangah Crescent Food Centre isn’t my usual foodie hunting ground and I was a bit lost as I wandered around. Instead of joining the few long queues scattered around, I decided to take a chance on this carrot cake stall that had a sign proclaiming “So Good!” to see if they’re as good as they claimed. Also, I’ve been craving carrot cake after having to miss out on it so many times when I was working on my oyster omelette listicle.
The black and white fried carrot cake were sold in $3 and $4 portions. Blocks upon blocks of the white radish cakes filled the wok and the uncle allowed them to brown nicely before giving them a thorough toss every now and then.
I couldn’t decide between white and black, so I went with both. Most people who aren’t fans of white carrot cake say that it’s because it lacks flavour in comparison to black correct cake. Unlike the typical flat egg pancake-style carrot cake, Guan Seng Carrot Cake’s white version featured chonky cubes of carrot cake that had been beautifully caramelised along with the eggs.
Their radish cakes were nicely and evenly seasoned, and while they kept sliding off my fork, the cubes retained a firm texture. I felt that they could have been a bit more heavy-handed with the chye poh (preserved radish) though. It was also lacking the wok hei that would have nicely tied the whole dish together.
Even though it wasn’t as charred as the white one, all the cubes in the black carrot cake were coated well in the sweet dark soy sauce. It was also considerably more eggy than the white carrot cake and, likewise, could have used more chye poh as well. On the bright side, the carrot cake dishes weren’t very oily so I felt just a teensy bit less guilty for buying both versions.
I always add chilli into my carrot cake and just like at most carrot cake places, make sure to request for more chilli if you’re a fan of spice like me cause the usual amount always never seems to be enough.
Guan Seng Carrot Cake might not be the best carrot cake I’ve ever had, but I think it’s worth a go if you’re in the area!
