Grandpa Homemade Cheung Fun – Stone-Milled Cheung Fun in Toa Payoh!
June 11, 2022
As I headed to Grandpa Homemade Cheung Fun, I was most excited to try the more interesting Cheung Fun flavours they offer — Dragonfruit and Spinach. Unfortunately, because the team lacked time to prepare those that day, they weren’t available.
Nonetheless, I went straight for their Original Cheung Fun with Prawns ($5.20). Right off the bat, the wrinkled look of the Cheung Fun caught my eye. Unlike your typical Hong Kong-style ones, Grandpa Homemade Cheung Fun offers Guangdong style stone-milled Cheung Fun.
Here, the sheet of rice noodle is pushed and scraped, rather than folded into thin layers.
The silky smooth Cheung Fun was still slightly chewy, which made for a nice bite. Furthermore, the sweetness from the fresh prawns complemented the savoury homemade soy sauce beautifully.
I could not pass up on their Original Char Siew Cheung Fun ($5.20) as well. Before being steamed with the rice slurry, the pork belly is first air fried. That said, the diced Char Siew was still extremely tender and carried both sweet and savoury notes.
Finally, from their wide selection of fillings available, I chose the Original Egg & Veg Cheung Fun ($4.90). This was a lot lighter on the palate as compared to the two other dishes I had but, it was still rather delightful.
Not forgetting the chilli being one of the highlights here! Their chilli comprises Hae Bee Hiam as one of the key ingredients and the umami of it paired perfectly with every mouthful of the Cheung Fun.
Grandpa Homemade Cheung Fun opens daily from as early as 6.30am. With traditional stone-milled Cheung Fun being a rarity these days, I’ll for sure be back for more!
