I can be a good confidant when it comes to keeping secrets. But, I am never someone who can keep a secret when it comes to food. Sometimes I wonder if age is catching up on me. I have a rather short term memory. For instance, I can be brushing my teeth one minute ago and forgotten if I have done so the next minute. Same goes for food. I have to think very hard to recall what I had the day before. BUT, if there is something I had which is memorable, it keeps coming back me and I can’t wait to share with the whole world about it.

So last Monday, I bugged Uncle Smart to bring me for makan at this bak chor mee stall at Tampines Street 21 with Ian. During our last makan session together, we went to the same stall at about 3pm and they were already closing. So it has been stuck in my mind for the longest time. So glad that we manage to have a bowl this time!

Occupying just half a stall at Tmapines Street 21, Fu Yuan Teochew Bak Chor Mee is really an unassuming establishment. The owner is formerly working as an assistant with Twa Hua when he was a young boy. He has been in this trade for more than 30 years and I dare say, IT TASTES SO GOOD! (And very similar to Tai Hwa BCM!)

We ordered a bowl of mee pok. At first glance, the mee pok looked a tad dry. But once the noodle and sauce were tossed up, they came together nicely. The noodles sits in a small pool of vinegar-based sauce and which is slurping good. The noodles is not as good as Tai Hwa’S Version but still considerably al-dente and springy.

The sweet, spicy and tangy sauce is dangerously addictive, I just keep slurping my noodles. Especially the vinegar, very fragrant and seems like it’s a superior brand. Topping the noodles are a mixture of minced pork, liver, pork balls, fried sole fish, etc. You get a bowl of soup on the side as well.

With ingredient prices and rental going up, food costs are getting more expensive and hawkers may not be able to earn as much as before. Nevertheless, you can have a really satisfying meal with quality goodness with a $3 bowl of BCM at Fu Yuan. Boyfriend and I always complain that the portion for Tai Hwa is really small. For a bowl of $6 Tai Hwa BCM, it can probably feed me 2/3 full (or maybe because I eat like a giant). But if I were to pay $6 here, I am sure I will be bloated.

In addition to the noodles, we also had a separate bowl of dumpling soup ($4) to go along. Dumplings are good and handmade with love. Some deep fried fish bits are added for the crunch. FYI, the owner does not add any MSG into the soup.

In my opinion, this is a good bowl of BCM. Concentrated flavours and has juicy giao. I will come back for it again soon.
