For The People – Churro Waffles, Good Coffee & Chill Vibes All Around
February 16, 2021
My first thought upon stepping into the cafe space of For The People was, “Whoa, did I enter a showroom by mistake?” The minimalist decor made me feel like I was in the plush living room of someone’s house. Decked out in grey, and dressed with potted greenery and light wood furnishings, it seemed like a relaxing place for people to pass time, and a good workplace for work-from-home folks (I spied quite the number of power sockets, not to mention free Wi-Fi!).
Counter seats are available if you want to watch the baristas at work. Their coffee is brewed from a mixture of beans from Brazil and Colombia. If tea is more, well, your cup of tea, they do have infusions such as Topaz Peach ($6.50), Jasmine Pearl ($7) and the caffeine-free Jade Hibiscus ($6.50). For refreshing options, go for the healthy smoothies like the Tropicano ($9.50) which has mango, pineapple, banana and mint.
It was the perfect time for brunch and the Big English Breakfast ($20) sounded like a good fit for my ravenous appetite. As the name suggests, the heaping platter came loaded with your typical English breakfast food items: grilled sausage, bacon strips, sauteed mushrooms, baby spinach, roasted tomatoes, sourdough bread, hashbrown and your choice of eggs. I got mine scrambled and while it was made with great technique, I would have preferred if it was seasoned.
Likewise for the mushroom,s but the lack of seasoning made its earthiness stand out more. The bacon was a little too oily for me, but at least it wasn’t turkey bacon because I’m not much of a fan of that.
What got me excited was the Crispy Churro Waffles ($14), which you can also add a scoop of earl grey tea, french vanilla or triple chocolate ice-cream to for $3.50. I’m a huge fan of waffles and churros and this seemed like the best of both worlds. My hopes were a bit deflated by its presentation as the menu indicated that it would come with fresh fruit slices and photos online show various arrangements that add pops of colour. Mine came with a handful of grapes which seemed a little sad to me in comparison.
The baked waffles themselves had a chewier texture and were more doughy on the inside as compared to your typical waffle. I was hoping for a bit of a crunch on the exterior(like that of a churro). In terms of flavour, it mimicked that of churros with its generous dusting of cinnamon sugar plus a drizzle of chocolate syrup. The sweet-tooth in me was certainly happy with that.
I quite enjoyed the latte ($6.50) they served. Smooth and sweet even without the presence of sugar, it wasn’t too acidic and even came with a little cookie on the side.
They also have pastries in a display case that’s perfect for customers looking for something to grab-and-go or a small snack to enjoy with their coffee. Take your pick from classics such as butter croissants ($4) and pain au chocolate ($4.50), and even cinnamon croissants ($4.50) and blueberry crumble muffins ($4).
Service was brisk when it came to being seated and having my order delivered, and I really appreciated that. While the menu might seem similar to what most cafes would offer, I really liked the environment of For The People and would absolutely return to chill out with a good book and cup of coffee.
