FIX Grill Cafe- Grilling and Serving up Good Food in Balestier
April 15, 2015
Hot on the heels of the popular halal-certified FIX Gill, The Food Explorer F&B Group has just released the newest addition to their brand of casual eateries. Here comes FIX Grill, a casual mediterranean grill concept.
Built on the same promise as FIX Cafe, FIX Grill offers “Original Handmade Goods” of the edible kind, and sets itself apart with a few choice touches. Sporting a clean and rustic interior, this modern European grill house is an attention grabber with its hand-painted wall murals and music from. from the 90s blasting through overhead speakers. The kitchen’s attention to detail can be seen in its range of creative dishes, each component carefully put together to achieve a harmony of flavours in each dish. I am honoured to be photographing their food before the launch and also had a taste of some of the items.
One of the must-try appetisers is the Watermelon and Prawn Salad ($7). The watermelon cubes in the salad are first compressed, concentrating and enhancing the sweetness of each morsel, before being topped with contrasting flavours of crumbled feta, crunchy almonds and poached prawns and finished with a honey lemon verbena dressing.
Another appetiser not to be missed is the Hokkaido Scallops on Quinoa ($11). These plump scallops are sweet & juicy and lend a delicious flavour to the bed of quinoa and grilled corn it sits on, perfectly complemented with a homemade romesco sauce.
The Assorted FIX Grill Platter of Skewers ($25) makes a great dish for sharing. This is no ordinary platter of meat cubes, expect creative items like Greek Beef Keftedes skewers, Lamb Moussaka skewers, Chicken Tsukune Yakitori skewers and Homemade Prawn & Fish Cake skewers, all grilled to perfection and served with a delicious homemade pumpkin mash and potato crisps.
Made with good ingredients and the right meat to fat ratio, tsukune is tender and juicy, bursting with flavour with each bite. So is the prawn and beef ones. However, the skewers option was a tad too little in my opinion, I was expecting a larger variety from them, such as chicken with leek or even chicken soft bones! Perhaps even more grilled vegetables like tomatoes, eggplants or oyster mushrooms will be good too!
The good selection of mains, thankfully, has sufficient variety to suit any palate. Pasta lovers can choose between the vegetarian Primavera Pasta ($15), Seafood Pasta in a light broth ($17) or a hearty Homemade Beef Lasagna ($13).
I fell in love with the vegetarian Primavera Pasta almost immediately. You can clearly see from the beautifully styled image I took of it. Featuring tagliatelle with asparagus, cherry tomatoes, arugula, mushroom and feta, this rustic dish has a cleaner taste yet equally yummy when toassed with a flavorful pesto cream and fresh tomatoes.
The lasagna is made in-house and features layers of seasoned beef, tomato sauce, mushrooms and cheese. It’s creamy and tasty, one of the better ones I had. But it was too much for me to finish it all by myself. Well course, good food is worth sharing right?
Meat lovers will delight in the Bone-in Beef Shortribs ($32), slow-cooked for 24 hours to achieve a succulent texture and delicious beefy flavour. The magic of braising is that it transforms the tough, rugged texture of short ribs into fork-tender meat and creates a sumptuous sauce along the way. When you’re craving comfort food, you can’t beat meltingly tender short ribs. Non-beef eaters can go for the Slow-Roasted Half Chicken ($19) which is tender, juicy and served with a porcini cream sauce.
A perfect accompaniment to the dishes from the grill, FIX Grill also offers a range of Handcrafted Sodas (from $4 to $5.50) made from fresh fruits and herbs. Take your pick from Strawberry & Sweet Basil, Pineapple & Passionfruit, Ginger & Lime or Kiwi & Mint, all refreshing in taste and delightfully colourful. I like the Ginger & Lime Soda most! For desserts, you can order their warm chocolate cake or for me, I prefer to do cakes from FIX cafe.
There is a live grill alfresco area every Fridays to Sundays, it’s like a casual backyard grill, just grilling and serving up seasonal items fresh from the market. The smells of the food cooking on charcoal really makes me feel like I’m on holiday!
