Fishball Noodle Stall at Choa Chu Kang: A Tasty Find for Just $3.50
September 24, 2024
Choa Chu Kang isn’t a neighborhood I’ve explored much, but after hearing several people recommend a fishball noodle stall at Blk 144 Teck Whye Lane, I had to visit. What immediately caught my attention at this stall was the prices—$3.50 for a bowl of noodles — a great deal in today’s food scene.
Arriving at the rundown coffeeshop, I was surprised to see a long queue for the noodles even after lunch. With only two food stalls and a drink stall, the atmosphere was unassuming, and something quirky caught my attention: orders for the fishball noodles are placed at the drink stall, not directly with the fishball stall. It’s an interesting setup, though I wouldn’t say the drink stall staff were particularly friendly. Still, the long queue piqued my curiosity.
At just $3.50, the fishball noodles are attractively priced. While the fishballs don’t seem to be handmade, which some purists might find disappointing, they’re still decent—firm with a slight bounce, offering that characteristic springy texture. They might not stand out on their own, but they do their job in complementing the noodles and sauce.
Speaking of the noodles, they were cooked to perfection. The texture was spot-on: soft yet firm enough to hold up to the rich, flavorful sauce. The sauce is really the key here. It’s a well-balanced mix of soy sauce, chilli, and a hint of vinegar. It clings to the noodles beautifully, infusing each bite with just the right amount of heat and umami. The addition of meatballs and minced meat add texture and a subtle savouriness that complements the overall flavor profile.
What makes this fishball noodle special isn’t just the individual components, but how they all come together. The simplicity of the ingredients, combined with the well-cooked noodles and sauce mix, creates a dish that feels comforting and familiar. Given its price tag, it’s no wonder people queue for it, even long after the typical lunch rush.
Another interesting detail about this fishball noodle stall is that it has no name—just a humble setup in an old, worn-out coffeeshop. If you enjoy no-frills, old-school fishball noodles which is wallet friendly, this stall is definitely worth checking out. Just be prepared to queue, and maybe grab a drink while you’re at it!
