Sichuan KungFu Fish
We often forget that a yummy bowl of Mala is communal eating at its best. Not only do you experience pain-tinged shiokness from the numbing spiciness, you get to do it with your loved ones – truly capturing the spirit of Chinese New Year! So, what better way to welcome the new year with some good old Mala to bring the whole gang together?
Sichuan KungFu Fish is an international brand which originated from Shanghai, China. This chain franchise serves authentic Sichuan spicy dishes, specialising in grilled deep sea fish and seafood. Their signature Mala grilled fish is a must-have that will confirm appeal to Mala addicts! We had the Special Cod in Less Spicy Mala Soup ($66.90) which saw cod fillets submerged in a glittering plate of dangerous-looking Mala soup. The Mala grilled fish at Sichuan KungFu Fish is one of the best I ever had – crazy spicy, numbing and yet still remaining extremely flavorful and fragrant. The codfish itself was soft and sweet, though the intense Mala tend to overwhelm the natural flavours of cod. Don’t let the ‘less spicy’ option fool you – the spice level here is actually spicier and more potent than most Mala places!
There is also a variety of side dishes you can add to your Mala grilled fish, such as vegetables, premium seafood, mushrooms and meats. This truly makes reunion meals and catch-ups at Sichuan KungFu Fish an all-round inclusive dining experience for everyone!

The signature Manhattan Dory ‘n Chips ($13.95) sees soft dory fish fillet hand-battered in a crispy golden shell and served with chips and side salad. Don’t forget to dip the tender dory in the special Garlic Herb sauce, as its subtle acidity nicely cuts through any fried greasiness.

Muthu’s Curry Restaurant
Indian curry fish head may not be the first thing people associate with Chinese New Year, but rest assured that Muthu’s Curry Restaurant will bring a unique and aromatic spice-infused twist to your reunion dinners.
This long-standing establishment needs no lengthy introduction, having humbly started out in 1969 by founder S. Ayyakkannu serving authentic and innovative South Indian Fish Head Curry. It was my first time trying Muthu’s Signature Curry Fish Head ($22/$27/$32) and I could see why the award-winning dish remains popular after fifty years.
This South Indian curry fish head holds a robust curry gravy with strong aromatics from the blend of spices (which includes a hint of tamarind), making this a potent and solid pot of Indian curry. The spiciness of the curry fish head starts off gradual and slowly builds into a tolerable yet satisfying level of heat that is sure to appeal to spice lovers. We had the Red Snapper for our curry fish head and was informed that the type of fish used changes according to the season. Remember to soak up the delicious curry with their assorted naan or fragrant biryani rice!
Did you know that curry fish head in Tamil is called min talai kari? The friendly staff at Muthu’s Curry informed us that the meaning behind min talai kari is good luck! How appropriate and befitting of the prosperity and auspiciousness for Chinese New Year!
