Looking for a place to eat, yet can’t decide whether to go to Old Airport Road or Bedok for the goodies? Visit Fernvale Hawker Centre & Market today. Housing popular hawker stalls that have their original outlets elsewhere, the hawker centre is definitely worth a visit!

Conveniently located beside The Seletar Mall, the hawker centre is on the third floor of Fernvale Community Centre. Compared to the hawker centres we all know, Fernvale Hawker Centre & Market is much more modern; Spacious aisles, clean tables, and giant industrial fans, they have it all to make dining comfortable for patrons. Within the community centre, there is also a wet market, and on the top floor, there is a gym, some dance studios and also areas for you to do work.

If you do decide to head over, make sure you check the opening hours of the stalls first! Some stalls only open in the evening while others close once they are sold out! The stalls that I visited were mostly already open at 10.30 am. So without further ado, here is a list of stalls that I tried, along with my thoughts about the dishes:

Feng Xiang Herbal Bak Kut Teh and Fried Porridge (#03-01)

fernvale-21

The first stall you will see on the left when you go up the escalator is Feng Xiang Herbal Bak Kut Teh and Fried Porridge. They are known for their Malaysian dishes, so you can expect to find flavours of Klang in their menu.

While their herbal bak kut teh was eye-catching, I decided to go for their Pork Cutlet Fried Porridge ($6.90) instead.

fernvale-03

It was a treat to watch the chef cook the fried porridge, with the flames under the wok going up into the air. Of course, it’s not just theatrics, the porridge captures the taste of the flames as well. There is a smoky, wok hei which comes through in every mouthful, and the porridge has a little hint of bak kut teh as well, probably because of the ingredients used to simmer it before. On top of the porridge lie fried shallots, spring onions, crispy pork lard, and needless to say, the pork cutlet. Albeit a little salty, the crispiness of the pork cutlet gave a nice contrast to the soft porridge and the porridge helped to balance out the saltiness. I can say for sure that I will return for more fried porridge!

Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle (#03-09)

fernvale-17

Next, we have Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle. Their famous branch is located at Old Airport Road, but we can now enjoy their Prawn Noodles in Fernvale too. They offer their Prawn Noodles in both dry and soup versions, and you can also choose to have pork ribs, pig’s liver, and even pig’s tail to go with your prawn noodles.

fernvale-06

I got the dry version of the Big Prawn Pork Ribs Pig’s Liver Noodles. Their dry versions all come with a bowl of prawn noodle soup. The prawns were really worth the price as they were huge and juicy! The noodles were coated in their homemade sauce, and it was savoury and a little spicy. However, if I had to choose, I would prefer their soup version as I felt the dry version was less tasty.

Song Zhou Fried Carrot Cake (#03-27)

fernvale-19

This hawker stall has its OG outlet in Bedok Interchange Food Centre, and they serve up a good plate of both white or black carrot cake. Sadly, we cannot order a mixed plate of white and black carrot cake together.

fernvale-22

So I went for the black carrot cake, which was the more popular option at Song Zhou Fried Carrot Cake, and I am certain I didn’t make the wrong choice! Coated with the sweet black sauce, the chunks of carrot cake were tender yet just of the right consistency such that they were not mushy. They also delivered a slight wok hei. It was a plate of black carrot cake which I thoroughly enjoyed and it did not taste oily at all, even after several mouthfuls of it.

Hock Hai (Hong Lim) Curry Chicken Noodle (#03-14)

fernvale-15

Also from Bedok Interchange Food Centre, Hock Hai Curry Chicken Noodle has opened a branch here too. Here, you can choose to have either their Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Mee, or their Satay Bee Hoon.

fernvale-05

From their name, I had to go for their Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Mee right? And it certainly lives up to its name and fame. The chicken pieces were big and tender, and delicious when paired with the gravy. The potatoes were cooked just right, easy to bite into and they did not disintegrate in the gravy. And the piping hot curry was not too spicy and had just the right consistency. The only downside is that the taupok was quite salty, but that was probably because it had soaked up all the ‘zhup’ from the curry. All in all, it was a good bowl of noodles to chomp down.

Seng Hiang Bak Chor Mee (#03-07)

fernvale-16

Of course everyone has heard of Bedok 85’s Bak Chor Mee, Seng Hiang Bak Chor Mee also has a space in Fernvale Hawker Centre & Market! They are famous for their soupy Bak Chor Mee.

fernvale-01

I had the $4.50 Bak Chor Mee Soup, and it came with minced meat bits, and 5 meatballs, along with the noodles. The soup was a little sweet and tasted good together with the noodles. The noodles were springy and did not have the common alkaline, yellow noodle taste which was good news! The meatballs had just the right amount of chewiness, and were very yummy!

Amoy Street Lor Mee (#03-24)

fernvale-18

Amoy Street Lor Mee was easily noticeable with its snaking queue, even though it was still early for lunch. From just $3.20 onwards, their Lor Mee is surely an affordable option! If you would like to add other side dishes, such as dory fish nugget, crispy prawn roll, batang steak and braised pork belly, they are available at $2 each.

fernvale-24

The Lor Mee makes a good photo before it is all mixed up. Taste wise, the noodles had a little bit of a starchy taste for me. Other than that, the fried fish was crispy and soft inside. The gravy did whisk away the starchy taste in the noodles. The egg was also cooked well, where the whites were hard enough to hold its shape, yet soft to the bite. Together with the tender yolk, it is just like having a perfect hanjuku egg in your Lor Mee.

China Whampoa Handmade Noodles (#03-12)

fernvale-14

Originating from Whampoa Food Centre, China Whampoa Home Made Noodles is rumoured to be one of Singapore’s most popular Ban Mian stalls. The bowls are generally priced at $5 unless you order fish or abalone and they are only made upon order.

fernvale-02

I got the Razor Clams Dry Mee Hoon Kuey, which was not particularly impressive for me. Perhaps I should have gone for their Signature Noodles with Prawns instead. However, I must admit that I was too lazy to peel the shells of the prawns myself. The Mee Hoon Kuey was smooth and firm, but not hard. The chilli was spicy for me, so if you are unable to take spice well, do not opt for chilli! While the texture of the meatball was good, it was a tad bit salty for me. The only disappointing part? The razor clams were pretty tasteless. Other than that, I would not mind ordering the Dry Mee Hoon Kuey again, maybe this time with prawns!

Xin Xin Claypot Rice (#03-13)

fernvale-13

A claypot rice stall run by millennials, Xin Xin Claypot Rice attracted the media’s eyes when it started its operations in Kovan. Although the Kovan stall has closed down, the team has opened an outlet here in Fernvale Hawker Centre & Market. Inside the stall was a row of traditional charcoal stoves and each claypot rice is cooked individually.

fernvale-10

Priced at $7.50, the Claypot Rice was more than enough for one person. The Claypot Rice is served piping hot and each bowl is generously filled with chicken chunks, salted fish, chinese sausage, and vegetables. Each spoonful was fragrant and you can taste the sesame oil in the dish without it being too overpowering. The chicken was tender and I liked how the chicken pieces were mostly boneless, making them much easier to eat. There were charred bits of rice at the bottom, giving the Claypot Rice a nice crunch. And the salted fish just added to its goodness!

Munchi Pancakes (#03-04)

fernvale-20

A twist to the traditional Min Jiang Kueh, Munchi Pancakes makes their Min Jiang Kueh with not just the original plain batter, but Charcoal and Matcha batter as well. Apart from their unique batters, they also have flavours not seen in Min Jiang Kuehs such as Biscoff, Black Sesame and also Matcha Red Bean Min Jiang Kueh. Other super interesting flavours include Strawberry Cheese, Thai Milk Tea and Belgian Chocolate. The pancakes are round and the fillings ooze out with every bite taken.

fernvale-07

I ordered the Charcoal Biscoff Min Jiang Kueh, Matcha Red Bean Min Jiang Kueh, and Thai Milk Tea and Oreo Cheese Pancakes. When I went, there was a sign saying that the Munchi Pancakes were sold out. However I managed to order and then collect them in about 15-20 minutes.

The kueh was soft and chewy, and while I enjoyed the different flavours, it was not easy to finish them all in one sitting unless you really have a sweet tooth! It is best to have a group of friends to share these pancakes with.

fernvale-08

The Oreo Cheese Pancake has a strong cream cheese taste, and I had hoped for a stronger oreo taste. It tasted nice for the first few bites, but after a while it got quite jelak. I liked the Charcoal Biscoff Min Jiang Kueh the most. Although the Charcoal batter did not have much of a difference in taste compared to the original, the Biscoff filling was savoury, sweet, creamy and also crunchy at the same time. It, however, tasted pretty oily and sinful, but I think it’s definitely still worth the calories! Another flavour which I enjoyed was the Thai Milk Tea Pancake. It was just like drinking the real Thai Milk Tea. But the filling was spilling out with every bite, so I think that they can go lighter on the fillings. Last but not least, the Matcha Red Bean Min Jiang Kueh was just alright, the red bean filling was overly sweet for me and it only had a slight matcha taste.

If you enjoy desserts and have a penchant for sweet things, Munchi Pancakes is a stall you might like to try here in Fernvale Hawker Centre & Market!
