Oh, the versatility of eggs. No matter what form they’re in, egg dishes are loved by almost everyone. Combine that love with the arrival of one of the hottest brands from Los Angeles and you’ll see mad crowds rushing in from every part of Singapore to check out the hype. Eggslut has finally opened its doors and is already capturing the hearts (and taste buds!) of many.

Having started out as a little-known food truck in LA in 2011, the brand shot to fame and quickly became a household name with brick-and-mortar stores in Las Vegas, Seoul, Tokyo, Kuwait and London. In fact, the outlet in Singapore is its very first outlet in Southeast Asia.

The day of their highly-anticipated opening saw astounding queues that stretched down the block, with people already in line from as early as 9am. I found myself being baked in the blazing hot sun for almost two hours. Some folks had even brought chairs to wait out their time in the queues before they finally entered the brightly-lit, air-conditioned egg haven.

The interior boasted a sleek industrial-like decor fleshed out with wooden tables and countertop seats, floor-to-ceiling windows to allow in floods of natural sunlight, and an open kitchen concept where you can see a mini army of chefs assembling dozens of orders at once.

Gracing their menu are six different types of sandwiches and burgers that include classics like the Bacon, Egg and Cheese Sandwich ($12), Cheeseburger ($13.50 for a single, $17 for a double) and Egg Salad Sandwich ($10.50). Pair your eggy mains with sides such as Truffle Hashbrowns ($4.50) seasoned with duck fat, truffle and rosemary salt, chonky House-made Buttermilk Biscuits ($6) and large Salted Chocolate Chip Cookies ($3.50).

To quench your thirst, Eggslut has collaborated with homegrown craft brewery Brewlander to produce two exclusive flavours of craft soda: Elderflower & Lemon and Grapefruit & Ginger ($4.50). There’s also Fresh Orange Juice ($5.50) and cuppas brewed using beans from Common Man Coffee Roasters.

As the signature item that has received rave reviews across all outlets internationally, the Fairfax Sandwich ($12) sees cage-free eggs beautifully scrambled with chives, caramelised onions, cheddar cheese and sriracha mayo sandwiched between two fluffy brioche buns. The sweetness from the caramelised onions made for a perfect accent alongside the creamy scrambled eggs.

Fellow carnivores need not miss out on the joy of meat, thanks to the Gaucho Sandwich ($23). A massive bite into this hearty burger will treat you to delightfully tender slices of seared wagyu tri-tip steak, an over medium egg with a slightly runny yolk, chimichurri sauce, red onions and dressed arugula. I appreciate how generous they were with the meat, and how each slice was perfectly seasoned.

While it was flavours galore with this choice of burger, the chimichurri spread was quite a thick layer so some might find the strength of it a tad overwhelming.

When it comes to the specialty, I’ve seen mixed reviews online about The Slut ($11) — about how bland it can be. Well, I’m here to debunk them. Served in a quaint glass jar is creamy potato puree topped with a cage-free coddled egg with a sprinkling of gray salt and bright green chives for that pop of colour, alongside thin slices of baguette.

The flavours here are definitely on the lighter side but made for a refreshing change from the sandwiches. Buttery and smooth, the egg-and-potato mixture was very soothing and the chives gave it a nice boost. My only gripe lies with the baguette as I was expecting them to be crispy.

With the quality of the food served here, I take no issue at all with the prices (think of it as similar to prices in a cafe) and would definitely return again(once the hype dies down, that is). Two hours in line is not worth it so you’ll probably only see me returning in a month or two. It was still a pretty darn egg-cellent eggs-perience though (sorry, I just had to).
