Culture Spoon – Shared Kitchen Concept With Excellent Pastries
February 08, 2021
You might have heard of co-working offices before, but what about a co-working kitchen? Culture Spoon is a modern co-working kitchen and a safe space for all aspiring food entrepreneurs. Culture Spoon was started with an aim to encourage those who are just starting out on their journey in the F&B industry.
Shirlyn, one of the co-owners, explained it may be daunting for many to put in a big amount of capital to run a food business that might not work. Hence, a temporary place like this might help them figure out how well their food is received, and if the chef life is the path they really want to seek. With different brands coming onboard, Culture Spoon is able to provide a changing variety to customers every day. The menu of the day depends entirely on what the chefs want to whip up.
I was really delighted to hear this concept and the story behind it. I love that the team behind Culture Spoon is not only interested to succeed on their own, but also in the business of helping others succeed as well. What’s more, they have a nice space which is really the whole package for anyone that wants to start a cafe but lack the capital to. The public can also rent the kitchen for bulk cooking or baking needs but a basic prerequisite is to have the necessary food hygiene certifications. Please check out their website for more details.
Wok With Man’s authentic Thai menu was available on the day of my visit. I got the Thai Crabmeat Fried Rice ($9.50) from there as it’s one of the chef’s specials. I was not expecting that generous spread of actual crab meat. The dish comes along with two types of sauces — chilli and a Thai-style dipping sauce.
The Thai fried rice taste was not as flavourful as I expected a bowl of Thai-style fried rice to be. It had a lighter flavour but a strong wok hei. It was still enjoyable nonetheless, and it wasn’t too oily too!
I’ve heard a lot about the pastries from Cultured Bakeyard. The pastries are available daily, all day long. It is the only permanent brand here as they are run by Jia Jian and Shirlyn, the co-owners of Culture Spoon. I was really looking forward to the pastries, especially given the couple’s years of experience in the F&B industry.
We got the signature Basque Cheesecake ($9), Pecan Pie ($8) and the Black Sesame Tang Yuan Mousse ($8). I enjoyed every single dessert. Coming from someone like me who doesn’t have a sweet tooth, that says a lot!
First up, the Shirlyn’s Signature Basque Cheesecake. Accompanying the cheesecake is a dollop of vanilla Chantilly that complements the cheesecake very well. The cheesecake had an extremely smooth consistency and it just melted in my mouth. It was so soft and smooth that you might forget that it is a cake. If you love cheesecake, do give this a try!
My favourite is the Pecan Pie. I love how the pecans are whole, and entirely covered in honey such that they are glistening. The pie filling is made of brown sugar syrup-soaked sponge cake, hence it’s stiffer and holds its shape very well.
And last but not least, the Black Sesame Tang Yuan Mousse. It was one of the most interesting items on the menu. It is made up of black sesame curd, vanilla mousse, white chocolate, and rice puff and mixed nuts coated in milk chocolate.
It was firm and easy to cut through, and had just the right amount of sweetness.
The tea selection is from The Tea Affair and the beans are from Quater Life Coffee. Both brands have a wide range of interesting brews which pair well with the bakes from Cultured Bakeyard.
We got the Cloud 9 Dragon ($3.80) and a Filter ($7) with Felipe Vaquez (Colombia, Washed Processed) beans . The coffee beans are seasonal, hence remember to check-in with the barista on what types of beans are available on that day!
It’s a whole lot of brands that are mentioned at once, but that’s the beauty of a shared kitchen! You get a diverse range of food experiences all in one place. It’s a nice chill out spot too. So come by once in a while and be surprised by the ever-changing menu as different chefs come onboard! Do give them a follow on their social media accounts for the latest updates.
