The Courtyard’s Afternoon Tea – Dining in Singapore’s 71st Monument

Sometimes you leave a meal feeling more stressed than you arrived. The fear that a dish you wanted was sold out. Or the waiter disappeared and your drinks were not served. But there is a dining experience that will leave you feeling pampered and relaxed: afternoon tea.

I did a fun poll with HSBC on Twitter asking readers to vote where should I go for tea. Amongst 879 fans who voted, 70% of them voted for me to go for Fullerton Hotel’s afternoon tea. And here I am – having a traditional afternoon tea at The Courtyard in The Fullerton Singapore!

Located in the sunlit atrium lobby of the hotel, this is where guests can enjoy a leisurely afternoon while sitting on plush sofas. Good news is, they have a great promotion – one dines FREE with every three paying adults!

Even though much of the fare was expected, the entire experience was still a real treat. There were scones, finger sandwiches and amuse-bouche to start, including Otak-Otak and Quail Egg Sandwich with Walnut Bread; Brie Cheese, Plum Jelly, Pistachio with Hazelnut Cracker; Mini Bagel, Prosciutto Ham with Cheddar Cheese; Smoked Salmon Mille Feuille with Avruga Caviar; Smoked Duck with Spicy Mango Salsa; and Curry Egg Sandwich on Brioche Roll. I liked how they had a mixture of western and local sandwiches, which allowed us to try a variety.

Sweets were really tasty. They had interesting flavours such as Chocolate Éclair; Red Velvet Cup Cake; Vanilla Crème Brulee; Salted Caramel Chocolate Tart; Double Flavoured Macaroon; English Fruit Cake with Raspberry Financier; Lemon Tart; Kueh Lapis. My favourite will always be their lemon tart – a perfect balance of sweet and tart.

Of course, the highlight of the show was the tea. The Courtyard had more than 10 different teas to choose from. That seems to be their point of pride. Here I chose Sencha Meicha – a majestic and noble tea from Shizouka region. This delicate, simultaneously grassy tea conveys a sense of serenity that is characteristic of only the finest quality Japan green teas.

The service was equally rich, with the waitress checking to make sure everything was satisfactory. Much attention was paid to ensure my teacup was full and refilling everything I needed.

Don’t forget to make a special note of the ambience in Singapore’s 71st monument. The greens and golds of the interior banished all thoughts of the cloudy Wednesday afternoon outside, as the Traditional English Afternoon Tea was served. I appreciate the generously spaced table settings to ensure the privacy of conversations.

The Courtyards’s Traditional English Afternoon Tea is priced at S$63++ per adult, with a glass of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Reims France, N.V.; S$53++ per adult (with a glass of Red or White Wine) or S$43++ per adult.
