Cheong Kee Wanton Mee – Malaysian-Style Wanton Mee in Ang Mo Kio!
May 25, 2022
Cheong Kee Wanton Mee is helmed by 4th generation hawker Alex, who brought his family’s recipe to Singapore after becoming a Permanent Resident. Hailing from Pahang, Malaysia, Alex prepares his Wanton Noodles with a black sauce which is different from our typical Singapore-style Wanton Mee.
Their signature Char Siu Wanton Mee ($4.50) came with a side of wanton soup. The silky smooth wanton had quite a good portion of filling. The meat was extremely flavourful and complemented the noodles really well too.
I was expecting the noodles to be the star of the show and I was definitely not disappointed! They were cooked to perfection — firm yet chewy — with the savoury black sauce sticking to it nicely. Although the char siu was slightly tough, I dipped it in the sauce and it was all good.
A side of green chilli and dried chilli is given for those who prefer some spice with their noodles.
As recommended by Alex, I also had their Char Siu Kway Teow Noodles with Curry ($4.50). Deemed as a more “Malaysian-style” dish by the chef, the kway teow is first mixed with their black sauce before it is blanketed in a fragrant curry sauce. The curry added a nice kick of spice and creaminess to each mouthful.
The mix of flavours left my tastebuds a little confused because it was unlike anything I’ve ever tasted before. Despite this rendition being more foreign to me, it was surprisingly addictive and I quickly found my plate empty. The usual suspects in a Wanton Mee dish were present here as well.
Besides Wanton Mee, they also offer Yong Tau Fu and Curry Noodles. But, they are nothing like your local curry chicken noodles, Alex shared that it’s similar to Laksa but with their homemade curry instead.
Their stall is located in a coffee shop just opposite Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park so, be sure to pop by for a post-exercise treat!
