Champion Bolo Bun – Sink Your Teeth Into Awesome Bolo Buns at Tanjong Pagar (It’s So Fluffy, We’re Gonna Die!)
April 21, 2021
I’ve always been a fan of the roving bo luo bao brand that have won fans over at events such as Yummy Food Fair, the World Food Fair and Singapore ArtBox. Ever since I found out that Champion Bolo Bun was opening a flagship store, I’ve been keeping tabs on their socials almost every day.
Champion Bolo Bun manages to blend in with the shophouse-style eateries along Tanjong Pagar Road, and yet still stand out with its bold lettering. Once you step in, you will see the clever put-together of traditional features and contemporary touches. The modern white space is spruced up with plants and rattan-like furniture.
The first level might be a little cramped since it’s mostly a waiting area for your orders. Head up to the second and third floors for bright, airy spaces outfitted with sleek wooden tables, low chairs and potted greenery. The floods of natural sunlight brought a soothingly vibrant atmosphere to the whole place, making it ideal for a relaxing afternoon.
The menu focuses solely on their specialty: bolo buns. Well, those plus a few beverages like coffee to round off the perfect tea-time. I was looking forward to the Hong Kong-style Champion’s Milk Tea ($5.50 for hot, $6 for iced) but they were all out by the time I placed my order. Bummer.
Nevertheless, my excitement wasn’t dampened in the least as I prepared to sink my teeth into what I mostly came here for. We started off with the Classic ($4.50). The pillowy bun was delightfully soft and fluffy, and was topped with a golden-brown cookie crust that gave an ultra-satisfying crunch when bitten into. It was sweet, but not overwhelmingly so. Size-wise, it was quite big to the extent that it took effort to bite into the bun, so it’s definitely worth the price to me.
The Classic With Butter ($5) had an added savouriness, thanks to the slab of butter nestled within its fluffy folds. I preferred this because bread and butter always make a delightful combo; even more so when you have the bo luo’s crust for that added sweetness and texture.
Good for sharing back at the office (which I brought back myself) and for those on-the-go, the Mini of 4 ($4.50) are the mini-mes of the Classic. It still maintained the same quality as its bigger counterpart and left me enough room to try the next bun on my list – the Curry Potato ($6).
It was very much like a curry puff, but bo luo bao version. My favourite part was splitting the bun right down to the middle to reveal – behold! – a glistening mixture of curry and potato. The tingling spiciness from the curry was on-point and made for a surprisingly good pairing with the sweetness of the bun’s crust.
Since the Champion’s Milk Tea wasn’t available, I got the Champion’s Coffee ($5.50 for hot, $6 for iced) and Champion’s Lemon Tea ($5.80 for hot, $6.30 for iced) instead. The coffee brew was very robust and had a bold flavour profile that was brought out even further thanks to the milk. The lemon tea wasn’t too sweet but rather refreshing and a good palate cleanser.
All I have to say is that the buns were clearly worth the wait and Champion Bolo Bun is sure to see quite the crowd for both its food and setting. But most importantly, now I get to eat these fluffy, buttery buns any time, any day!
