At Block 216 Bedok North Market & Food Centre, there’s an interesting dynamic that regulars will immediately recognise. Two kway chap stalls sit within the same space, both drawing steady queues, both with their own loyal following. Some people are fiercely loyal to one, while others switch depending on the day, the queue, or simply what they feel like eating.

On this visit, I found myself at Chai Chee Kway Chap, a stall that doesn’t shout for attention but quietly delivers a solid, comforting bowl at a very wallet-friendly price.

Kway chap has always been one of those dishes that leans heavily on execution rather than innovation. It’s about balance, texture, and how well each component comes together. At Chai Chee, nothing feels overly ambitious — just a straightforward, well-done rendition that respects what the dish is meant to be.

The surprise here is really the price. A one-person set at $4.50 feels almost like a throwback, especially in today’s climate.

What stood out most for me was the braised intestine. It had that lovely bite that kway chap lovers look for, without any overpowering taste. Clean, well-handled, and very easy to enjoy. The pig skin is another highlight. Most of the fat has been trimmed away, leaving behind a texture that is surprisingly springy with a slight crunch, even though it remains tender. It holds the braising sauce beautifully, giving each bite flavour without feeling greasy. The braised pork ties everything together, I love dipping it into the chilli sauce which rounds out the plate nicely. Nothing fancy, but comforting and satisfying.

The kway here is soft and smooth, almost silky as it slides down. Each sheet is lightly coated in the savoury braising sauce, and it makes you keep going without realising. One thing I appreciated was how generous they were with the soup. The bowl came filled right to the brim, almost overflowing. It’s a small detail, but it makes a difference — especially for a dish like kway chap where the broth brings everything together.
