It’s only natural to flock to stalls selling good quality nosh at prices that are practically a steal. And this is what’s observed at Cai Ji Fried Fish Soup, as many come for their red grouper. Located in Chong Boon Market & Food Centre in Ang Mo Kio, Cai Ji Fried Fish Soup is where you can find generous bowls of fish soup with premium red grouper, alongside tasty fried fish and customisable carbs and veggies.

Word about how good the fish soup here is has definitely gotten around, judging by the consistently long lines leading up to the stall. It does take a little bit of a wait, but we promise that it’ll be worth it once you see the amount of ingredients heaped into the bowl.

While the more premium dishes such as the Red Grouper Fish Head Soup ($10/12) was what initially brought us here, we’d say don’t skip out on classic choices such as the Sliced Fish Soup ($5/7), Fried Fish Soup ($5/7), Seafood Soup ($5.50/7.50), Fish Porridge ($5/7) and even Handmade Noodles ($4)!

Choose between ee mian, mee sua, thick bee hoon, thin bee hoon or rice ($0.50) for your choice of carbs. Add in leafy greens such as xiao bai cai and lettuce, or even bitter gourd and yam.

The Red Grouper Sliced Fish Soup ($10/12) yielded a clear broth with an incredibly aromatic fragrance that will instantly whet your appetite. Dig in to find thick cuts of red grouper, tomatoes, greens and hefty chunks of yam. The soup was very flavourful with sweet notes that nicely bound the flavours together, making it addictive.

The red grouper fish was tender and clean-tasting, and the skin of the fish was pleasantly chewy too. Once paired with their tangy house-made chilli and fermented soybean paste, this is one dish that will satisfy immensely.

Another dish you definitely shouldn’t miss out on is the Double Taste Fish Soup ($5.50/7.50). Enjoy the best of both worlds with the simplicity of batang fish and the indulgence of their fried fish. While the batang fish might not be as tender as the red garoupa, the firm flesh had no trace of excess fishiness clinging to it.

The highlight, however, had to be the fried fish. Sure, the batter might have gotten soggy in the milky broth but it only further amplified the flavours of the fish and how well-seasoned it was overall. While the base of the soup was similar to the first dish, the added milk seemed to mute the flavours a little for me.

I was surprised to see that they also sold Mee Tai Bak ($4.50) and decided to give it a go. The broth was slightly thickened here and the bowl was filled to the brim with chewy mee tai bak, shrimp, tofu and beansprouts. It was a little plain-tasting to me, but a comfort-worthy dish that’s simple for the stomach.

If you like fish roe, be sure to give the Fried Fish Roe ($2/4/6) a go. These babies were battered nicely and the fish roe itself wasn’t too dry.

I can definitely see the reason behind the long lines at Cai Ji Fried Fish Soup. Quality red grouper at affordable prices, fragrant soup, and delicious fried fish? You’ll see me joining one of their queues again someday soon!
