Boon Keng Hainanese Chicken Rice Dishes Out $3 Plates of Tasty Chicken Rice
August 30, 2022
We’re all for supporting local businesses, especially when they’re so dedicated to honing their craft and always on the lookout to better themselves. A newcomer to the Boon Keng F&B scene since July, Boon Keng Hainanese Chicken Rice has already garnered quite the fanbase especially among the older folks in the residential area.
Prior to this, 43-year-old business owner Adrian was running a cleaning business that is still ongoing and that’s where he met his partners for Boon Keng Hainanese Chicken Rice. One of them was already in the chicken rice business so that easily kickstarted their venture.
He shared with us that he takes extra pains in ensuring the key complementing factors of a good chicken rice meal are up to par, namely the sauce drizzled over the chicken and the chilli sauce. There was especially more R&D involved when it came to the chilli sauce and when his sister, who isn’t a fan of chilli, absolutely loved it, he knew he had a winner. After tasting it ourselves, we can definitely vouch for it but we’ll go more into that later.
A simple plate of chicken rice can go a long way when it’s done well, and Boon Keng Hainanese Chicken Rice delivers just that with fragrant chicken rice topped with tender pieces of chicken, priced at just $3 per plate. The grains weren’t too oily and still yielded an aromatic flavour. Gobbling up the rice alone was almost enough!
The tender chicken was doused in a sweet-savoury soy sauce that’s made in-house daily. While it was already plenty good on its own, pairing it with dark soy sauce and chilli is a must. This was especially true for the latter which Adrian is especially proud of.
The house-made chilli sauce is freshly prepared everyday and kept chilled before being served to customers. “This is authentic chicken rice chilli,” he assured us, and the spicy-sour tang of the chilli definitely didn’t disappoint.
Another key highlight is their soup, yet another item that’s made in-house daily. Light and refreshing, the fragrant broth was very palatable and full of flavour and was accompanied by large chunks of radish that was boiled to perfection. You can also top up for a set meal to include a plate of veggies, and that will set you back just $5.50.
For bigger parties looking to share dishes between them, go for the whole steamed or roasted chicken and top it off with a braised egg. Their chickens are imported from Thailand and we love how consistently tender the chicken is.
While the star of the show is undoubtedly the chicken rice, you also can’t skip out on their Crispy Beancurd ($4)! The large cubes of tofu are coated in flour and deep-fried, resulting in a delectably crispy layer encapsulating soft tofu within. The yummy morsels are served with mayonnaise. We recommend having it at the coffee shop while it’s still fresh and piping hot!
It’s not often you get to see such affordable chicken rice that still meets the mark when it comes to quality. Even as we were taking photos, many patrons stopped by to assure us that the chicken rice was really good and urged us to quickly start eating, so that was already quite the testament to their dishes. Be sure to come by Boon Keng Hainanese Chicken Rice to give it a go yourselves and show some support!
