Bánh Mì Bé Bi – Authentic Vietnamese Stall with Homemade Banh Mi Along Upper Aljunied Road
October 04, 2021
Fan of banh mi? Make your way down to this unassuming Vietnamese stall hidden away along Upper Aljunied Road! At Bánh Mì Bé Bi, you can expect to find all sorts of authentic Vietnamese dishes ranging from banh mi and pho to side dishes such as cockles and mango and papaya salad.
The lady boss of the three-month-old stall got the idea to focus on this cuisine to cater to the Vietnamese community in the area. Don’t underestimate this shy, soft-spoken chef; she wakes up at the crack of dawn and bakes her own banh mi bread at 5am, preparing up to 200 rolls everyday. What’s even more impressive is that she’s completely self-taught!
You’ll be in for quite the conundrum when it comes to selecting what to eat from their extensive menu. There are seven types of banh mi to choose from with either chicken, pork or beef as your choice of protein and six variations of noodle dishes like Shredded Chicken Noodle Soup ($5.50) and Sliced Beef Noodle Soup ($5).
As for side dishes, it’s a whole other world of options that include Mango and Papaya Salad ($5), Fried Chicken Wings with Fish Sauce ($6), Grilled Hairy Cockles with Spring Onions ($10) and Vietnamese Grilled Lemongrass Pork ($10).
After seeking recommendations on what’s popular, the Grilled Pork Baguette ($5) was the first to set the stage of deliciousness. The baguette was baked to perfection – crispy on the outside but delightfully pillowy on the inside. It’s stuffed with grilled pork chunks, pickled carrots, daikon, cucumbers, cilantro and a handful of red chilli.
The pork was well-marinated and very tender, and well complemented by the crunchy vegetables. I loved how the chilli amazingly tied all the flavours together with its spicy punch.
The Stir-Fry Beef & Cheese Baguette ($6) was equally good, though I couldn’t quite find the presence of cheese amidst all the colourful ingredients. Nevertheless, this is still one banh mi you shouldn’t miss out on. The slightly sweet beef slices were thin but added a good bite once they’ve been rolled up into the baguette. I also liked how fish sauce was added to it, giving it a touch of sweet and savoury flavours.
Another signature item is the Beef Stew Baguette ($6) and boy, did it not disappoint. The hearty stew had plenty of sweet notes with a slight herbal touch and came with a heaping of stewed vegetables and beef chunks.
The fatty meat was super-duper tender, and just melted in my mouth. It was thoroughly infused with every bit of flavour from the broth. Mop up the rest of the stew with the baguette and descend into a nice food coma!
Fresh Spring Rolls ($4 for two pieces) are a staple when it comes to Vietnamese cuisine and works for a light bite if you’re feeling slightly peckish. Wrapped in thin rice paper, the spring rolls are packed with prawns, vegetables and rice vermicelli. The fresh vegetables added a good crunch and didn’t have a raw taste to them. The classic nuoc cham dip was sweet and tangy with faint citrus notes that paired well with the spring rolls.
Although Bánh Mì Bé Bi is situated in a quiet area, the food is astoundingly good and 100% worth the trip over. In fact, with so many things to try on the menu at such affordable prices, be prepared to either make a few return trips or treat yourself to an all-out feast.
