An Kee Braised Duck Rice @ Hong Lim Food Centre
May 25, 2014
The boyfriend and I made a trip to Chinatown a few weeks back to confirm our New Zealand tour package. Yes, we are flying to New Zealand in July!!! I am mad excited about it because New Zealand was supposed to be my graduation trip 5 years ago. A good friend and I have planned to go there for about a month, travel and work in farms. Air tickets were booked and farms accomodation had been arranged. Then H1N1 struck and for our safety, we cancelled the trip about two weeks before our departure.
So now I am finally heading to New Zealand, it’s excitement overload! It’s gonna be winter in July and I don’t think I am able to see any meh meh, but I think the beautiful snow mountain works too. Ok I will leave the details for next time. Anyway, why am I saying this. Because we were at Chinatown, we decided to drop by Hong Lim to eat Hill Street Bak Chor Mee. Frankly, I still very much prefer the one at Lavender lah, but I will never reject a bowl of bak chor mee. It has become my staple already.
But when we reached Hong Lim, the craving for bak chor mee wasn’t that strong anymore. Instead, we were tempted by An Kee Braised Duck Rice which is diagonally opposite Hill Street Bak Chor Mee. What caught our eyes? The shiny looking duck skin! Aiya, but I never bring my camera with me. Handphone to the rescue. In life, we always have to expect the unexpected. Haha!
We queued for approximately 20 mins but it was worth it. Duck meat was tender and skillfully sliced to have the same thickness that is perfect for the bite. The braised soy sauce was fragrant and complemented the kway chap rice sheets well. What is more unique is the braised rice. Usually in duck rice stalls, we either get white rice or yam rice. But here, the braising sauce is used to cook the rice. The shiny exterior makes it look so sexily delicious. Pig skin, pork belly and beancurd were yummy. However, I was put off by the very strong smell of the intestines that day. Think I will stick to my duck rice the next time.
