58 Prawn Noodle and Minced Meat Noodle – A Shiok Bowl of Prawn Noodle Near Bedok Reservoir Park
March 23, 2021
Located on the outskirts of Bedok Reservoir Park is an unassuming coffee shop housing 58 Prawn Noodle which serves some mouthwatering prawn mee. To know if you’re in the right place, just look around you to see if most people are having prawn mee served in the same type of crockery.
The menu spans across two signboards, with mainly Prawn Noodles on the left and minced meat noodles on the right.
I got the Big Prawn Noodle soup ($10.50) and the Pork Ribs Prawn Noodle dry ($6).
The first thing that caught my eye was the prominent ring of orange oil around the murky and dark soup. It was then that I knew that this bowl will be full of umami! True enough, it was the case. What made it better was the thick chunks of pork lard submerged in the soup. If you believe that the essence of a good bowl of prawn noodle is the soup, then you would absolutely relish this rendition.
We were greeted by a beautiful mess of 6 halved big prawns.
The fresh and juicy prawns, together with a rich and flavourful broth, make a satisfying bowl of prawn mee! They tend to sell out pretty quickly, especially on the weekends. I guess it’s true that the early bird catches the… prawns in this case.
The Pork Ribs Prawn Noodle, on the other hand, is the more value-for-money option. Although it may not have large prawns, it contains large chunks of pork ribs that were very filling!
The pieces of pork lard in the dry version are sprinkled on top of the noodles, and they remained crunchy. It’s a sinful indulgence, but who can resist the savoury and fragrant golden brown blocks? Not me!
The prawns in this variation of noodles are smaller than those in the big prawn bowl, so expect the prawns to be slightly less juicer and way smaller. The main star here is the pork ribs. It’s thick, and tender and comes off the bones very easily. It was quite well seasoned, and it carried a hint of prawn broth which I think might be what it was boiled in.
The noodles are served with a bowl of prawn broth on the side. If you love spicy food, do request to have chilli in the dry noodles. The chilli was quite shiok and the spice level was bearable, even for people who are not great with spicy food.
On a whole, it’s a damn shiok bowl of prawn noodles. If you need a prawn mee fix, I’d recommend this place! Do pick the right day to come as they are closed on Monday and Thursday.
